The Universal Life Force of Reiki

Raising Awareness for the Sato Dogs of Puerto Rico

Save A Sato is a non-profit, all volunteer organization dedicated to easing the suffering of Puerto Rico's homeless and abused animals. "Sato" is slang for street dog. We rescue Satos from the streets and beaches, give them medical care, food and shelter, and plenty of love. When they are healthy, we send them to one of our shelter partners for adoption into loving homes.

In January of 2010, Caly took her first, but not last, trip to Puerto Rico to share the healing energy of Reiki and The Journey(tm) with the dogs at Save A Sato.  This trip was the hardest, yet most rewarding experience for Caly.  Since her travels on behalf of Save A Sato, Caly has been a contributing columnist for Save A Sato.  Visit the Save A Sato website to follow Caly's articles, as well as to learn more about how you can help our beloved sato dogs.

MISSION STATEMENT

Basic Care

  • Initiate and support feeding programs for homeless animals. Stray and feral animals are only fed for the purpose of gaining trust which will lead to their eventual rescue. Once they are comfortable with human contact, only then will their rescue not serve to hinder their trust in their adoptive home.

  • Obtain basic vaccinations and spay/neuter services for stray animals in stable circumstances.

  • Provide collars and identification tags to strays in stable situations.

  • Immediate and concentrated efforts to assist homeless pregnant animals and newborn offspring.

  • Euthanasia of animals that cannot be rehabilitated due to severe medical or temperament problems.

Rehoming Services

  • Priority placement of feral-born young animals.

  • Recruit persons to provide temporary foster care for animals awaiting rehoming.

  • Animals to be rehomed only through recognized humane shelters that sterilize prior to adoption.

  • Animals rehomed in Puerto Rico will be subject to prior follow up.

  • Placement in our Partner shelters of all animals is under a "no questions asked" return policy.

Advocate for the Protection of Companion Animals

  • Utilization of electronic and print media to focus attention on the plight of companion animals in Puerto Rico.

  • Increase public awareness of Public Law 154 (August 2008).

  • Pursue enforcement of Public Law 154 (August 2008) through increased involvement of the law enforcement community.

  • Support new legislation that will serve to promote animal health and welfare.

  • Work to ensure that Government services to animals meet humane standards.

Liaison

  • Negotiate with local veterinarians as to reduced fees for services provided.

  • Liaison with the police to include education and intervention in abuse situations.

Outreach and Referral

  • Clearinghouse for information for tourists who want to help companion animals in Puerto Rico.

  • Initiate and maintain contact with animal rescue groups in Puerto Rico and the United States.

  • Maintain listing of individuals who provide services to homeless animals in Puerto Rico

  • Provide reputable referrals to owners who want to surrender a pet.

Fundraising

  • Distribute flyers identifying organization and mission.

  • Cost effective use of electronic and print media to inform the public of organization and mission.

  • Acceptance of donations of cash, food, supplies, and equipment to be used in furtherance of mission.

  • Maintain separate donation/disbursement fund for the feeding program to gain trust and eventual rescue of strays program.
